Coffee of the week - #02-17

January 20, 2017

Nord have once again served us a delightful coffee!

The Gichathaini washing station is located in the Nyeri region in Kenya, well known for its floral taste notes and acidity. We find this to have a somewhat fuller mouthfeel with a little less acidity compared to many other coffees from the region.

Around 800 farmers are growing these beans at 1600masl and delivering their crops to the mill. The conditions in this specific area are ideal; abundant rainfall, average temperatures of 15°C to 26°C, fertile soil, and clean water from the Ragati river. Once coffee is picked ripe, it is delivered to the factory on the same day and depulped. It is then set to wet ferment overnight to break down the sugars. In the morning, the coffee is washed using Ragati river water and then moved to raised drying beds. The water used during the fermentation and washing processes is re-circulated for conservation purposes and moved to soak pits away from water sources so that it can naturally filter into the earth and not pollute the area. When the coffee is on the raised beds it is hand turned and sorted.

Alongside this light and fruity Kenyan coffee we have also shipped a semi natural coffee from Brazil. As our aste buds and preferences are different we try to give you something different and something to compare against the other coffee. Although it is branded with "espresso" does not mean it can't work on the aeropress or the V60. In particular we find it to come out very nice on the aeropress.

The Mantiquera de Minas region is one of the most awarded regions in Brazil, but not only do they hos many COE coffees, but they have set quality standards or rather sustainability guidelines for coffee growing in the region.
